{"id":885,"date":"2017-01-06T10:00:35","date_gmt":"2017-01-06T10:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.juicegrape.com\/?p=885"},"modified":"2025-03-24T14:31:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T14:31:11","slug":"2017-south-africa-harvest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.juicegrape.com\/index.php\/2017\/01\/2017-south-africa-harvest\/","title":{"rendered":"2017 South Africa Harvest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spring season is almost upon us and we have some great news. \u00a0This year we will not only be offering Pinotage from South Africa, but&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Wait for it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Cabernet Sauvignon from South Africa too!!<\/p>\n<p>Also, we have\u00a0additional higher-end regions where we will be sourcing our South African grapes.\u00a0 In addition to the Breede River Valley we will also offer grapes from\u00a0Stellenbosch,\u00a0Olifantsriver, and the Cederberg Mountains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stellenbosch:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Location:<\/span><\/em> Western Cape, 31 miles East of Cape Town<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Grapes Being Sourced:<\/em><\/span>\u00a0Cabernet Sauvignon<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Grower Information:<\/em><\/span>\u00a0A meticulous vineyard manager, this Cabernet has intense fruit flavors. \u00a0The grapes create full, rich, complex wines that age well.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Geeky Facts:<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;Wines from these locations are often described as having a subtle mineral note which many believe is from the decomposed granite soils. The granite mountains are approximately 600 million years old, over 3 times as old as the soil in Napa where many of the Cabernet Sauvignon vines are grown.&#8221; (via <a href=\"http:\/\/winefolly.com\/review\/wines-south-africas-stellenbosch-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wine Folly<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olifants River:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Location:<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0One of the Northernmost wine regions in South Africa&#8217;s Western Cape. It spans 90 miles between Lutzville in the North and Citrusdal Valley in the South.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Grapes Being Sourced:<\/em><\/span>\u00a0Cabernet Sauvignon<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Grower Information:<\/em><\/span>\u00a0 The grapes thrive in the hot, dry mesoclimates and are tempered by cool ocean breezes at night and good cold units during winter. These growing conditions make the perfect recipe for good quality Cabernet Sauvignon. \u00a0Also, you will\u00a0find pockets of very old, almost ancient vines in this area. Vines were first planted in this area in the 1700&#8217;s<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Geeky Facts:<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0The Olifants River is named for the elephants that roamed the region in the 18th Century. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wine-searcher.com\/regions-olifants+river+valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">via Wine Searcher<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cederberg Mountains:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Location:<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0186 miles North of Capetown.\u00a0The Cederberg mountains\u00a0contain a nature reserve. The mountain range is named after the endangered\u00a0Clanwilliam cedar, which is a tree endemic to the area.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Grapes Being Sourced:<\/em><\/span>\u00a0Pinotage<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Grower Information:<\/em><\/span>\u00a0 These Pinotage grapes are from older vines and are cultivated at the highest altitude in South Africa. You can expect intense flavors with high levels of complexity. These grapes produce excellent Pinotage and can be compared to Napa and Sonoma in terms of quality.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Geeky Facts:<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 The mountains are noted for dramatic rock formations and San rock.<\/p>\n<p>The Pinotage grapes should be arriving towards the end of March and the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes should arrive at the end of April.\u00a0 We are expecting more information about crop estimates, clones, yeast pairings, photos, and more.
